CROWDS AND I

All along the square, thousands have come.
Streets and open space once deserted now throb.
And I remember silence, yet a few brief hours ago,
When I was solitarily the guardian of this place.

Like the tides flowing, they come and they go.
A wave of explosion filling the openness once again,
And receding at evensong to leave only doves and I,
Coveting the expanse, breathing the clear air.

I notice them always, yet they never see me,
A figment of their memory, as hurrying to go by.
But I take my time, to notice their presence,
And enjoy the community, that is flowing on by.

A tribute to Brian Clough. (His statue) and his memory.
